BART Silicon Valley Update8/4/2017 12:52 PM |
The VTA Board of Directors received the following update on Phase I of VTA’s BART Silicon Valley Extension Project at its regular board meeting, Thursday, August 3.
The schedule for passenger service established with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is June 2018. VTA has tracked more than 6 months ahead of schedule for most of the 5 years of construction and was anticipating an opening date by the end of this year.
Although BART Phase I is 97% complete, the 3% remaining is the most complex piece of the project, which is system integration and testing. This is where the new extension becomes fully integrated with the existing BART system. During this phase, there are literally thousands of tests to be performed which is necessary to assure the safety and reliability of all newly constructed facilities and systems.
Important changes were made by BART to the requirements for the conversion of the Warms Springs station in South Fremont from an end-of-line operation to a pass-through operation. Combined with the latest progress information from VTA’s Berryessa Extension contractors, it has become necessary to adjust the sequence of remaining work for VTA’s project.
Even after VTA completes all construction work, only BART and government oversight agencies can determine when the new extension will be ready for passenger service.
Although passenger service at the end of this year is no longer possible, VTA is working hand-in-hand with BART and the Joint Venture team, Skanska Shimmick Herzog, to achieve passenger service consistent with the FTA schedule in June 2018.
