VTA Building Site of Pow! Wow! San Jose Wall Art10/26/2017 10:10 AM |
“Big, colorful, abstract movements of color.” That’s how artist Ricky Watts describes his work as he transforms a blank wall into an artistic voyage. It’s apropos that Watts infuses a sense of movement into his work. He’s painting the side of a VTA-owned building in Downtown San Jose, right next to the future downtown path of BART Silicon Valley.
Watts is one of several artists adding a splash of color and vibrancy to walls throughout San Jose this week as part of the Pow! Wow! San Jose art and music festival going on this week.
“We invited local and out-of-town artists to paint murals on public buildings in downtown San Jose to showcase the genres of art in our community. The murals are a gift to the city…a reminder of the talent in the area,” said Carlos Araujo, executive producer, POW! WOW! San Jose.
Born in San Francisco, Watts still makes his home in Northern California and says he’s excited to help put San Jose on the map as an art center. He and the other artists involved in this effort are donating their time and art. His brightly colored swirling design on the VTA-owned building at First and Santa Clara Streets appears symbolic of the roads well-traveled by VTA (or at least we’re claiming that!)
“It isn’t necessarily a ‘thing’ more than it is a process, and I use the same process when I paint allowing the art to form as I go,” says Watts.
Eleven new mural sites are in progress this week, adding to more than a dozen other murals that have gone up throughout San Jose as part of the artistic effort of Pow! Wow! San Jose. You can get a glimpse of Watt’s mural in progress as you ride VTA light rail along First Street.
