A VTA team recently took home several top awards in the American Public Transportation Association’s Light Rail Rodeo, a national competition between the country’s major rail operators focused on safety, customer service, maintenance and operational skill.
Pedro Diaz and Rick Fredriksz won First Place awards for Operators and the Safety Test. They are shown at left in the photo above, with Technical Trainer Derrick Hugues and VTA General Manager and CEO Nuria Fernandez at right.
VTA also won a Certificate of Merit for Light Rail Security at the conference.
“We’re very proud of our light rail operator team for their performance at the APTA rail conference,” said Nuria Fernandez, VTA General Manager and CEO. “Rick and Pedro did a wonderful job representing their fellow operators who expertly navigate the challenges of operating these heavy vehicles every day.”
The Operators Competition measures professional skills as they navigate the challenges of a busy urban rail system, including train operation, knowledge of safety regulations, train equipment, and track right-of-way rules and procedures.
“This is a tough job, and one that few people understand,” said Inez Evans, VTA Chief Operating Officer. “These awards and the annual Light Rail Rodeo are a great opportunity to showcase and honor the daily efforts by our operators, mechanics, controllers and other staff to keep this important service running smoothly and safely.”
This years' competition included 14 teams with rail operators from 16 transit systems and 15 mechanic teams from the United States and Japan. The competition was hosted at Cromwell Station in Baltimore, Maryland.
