VTA Coach Operator to be Honored for Heroic Actions

|

On January 22 at 7:10 a.m., 17-year veteran Coach Operator Thomas Dominguez was driving his bus along Line 64 in downtown San Jose. While stopped at San Fernando and 1st Street, a female passenger approached him indicating she was choking. After the passenger motioned she wanted to step down from the bus, Dominguez opened the doors and followed her out.

While instructing other passengers to call 911, Dominguez began to administer the Heimlich Maneuver which resulted in successfully dislodging the blockage from the passenger's throat. Emergency Medical Services responded to complete a welfare check on the woman who checked out fine. She then turned to Operator Dominguez, thanking him with a great big hug.

Dominguez was hired as a Bus Service worker in May 1999. He has been a Coach Operator since 2005, with four years as a line instructor, and is currently operating out of the Chaboya Division.

When he’s not saving lives, Dominguez is operating his coach with professionalism and great customer service. He has an excellent attendance record and is well-liked by his peers. Thomas was recognized as Employee of the Month in January 2012 and took second place in the American Public Transportation Association Bus Rodeo skill challenge in 2008.

At tonight’s Board of Directors meeting, VTA General Manager Nuria Fernandez will recognize and give special tribute to Operator Dominguez for his heroic efforts. The General Manager Award is given to employees who go above and beyond the call of duty. The last honor was given to Coach Operator Tim Watson in June 2015 for his role in thwarting the kidnapping of a three-year old boy.

The Board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. and is held at the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors’ Chambers located at 70 W. Hedding Street in San Jose.
