Berryessa BART Station

Overview

Major construction activities continue at the site of the future Berryessa BART Station. Site preparation, which has involved the relocation of underground utilities and the demolition of buildings once comprising two sprawling industrial/business park complexes, is a step closer to completion. The last two former office buildings on the construction site will be demolished between now and May 2013. Upper Penitencia Creek, adjacent to where the station campus will be located, has been rerouted and restored to a more natural setting. The environmental project fulfills environmental and ecological mitigation requirements associated with the BART Silicon Valley Berryessa Extension Project. Additional site preparation includes improvements to roads within the project corridor. Perhaps the biggest indication of major activities at the site is the construction of the Berryessa Station Way vehicular bridge, which spans Upper Penitencia Creek, Recently, crews poured the new concrete deck. When the new BART station is opened, the new bridge will connect Berryessa Road with the station campus. Also upcoming will be pile driving work for the aerial substructure, which includes a new bridge over Berryessa Road to connect with the new BART station terminal.

Construction on this new station began in the spring of 2012:

Berryessa Road

• Berryessa Road will remain at street level, and a bridge for the BART track corridor will be built above the roadway.
• Berryessa Road is a busy thoroughfare; the roadway is populated with residential, industrial and commercial areas, including the Berryessa Flea Market. BART operates on an electrified third-rail and the tracks must be separated from the street. BART will operate over Berryessa Road on an aerial guideway structure (bridge), maintaining a safe environment at street level for pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicular traffic.

Mabury Road

• Like the BART overpass at Berryessa Road, a bridge will also be built above Mabury Road.
• Mabury Road is also a busy thoroughfare. BART operates on an electrified third-rail and the tracks must be separated from the street. BART will operate over Mabury Road on an aerial guideway structure (bridge), maintaining a safe environment at street level for pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicular traffic.

Construction work commencing in 2013-2014:

Trade Zone Boulevard

• Trade Zone Boulevard will remain at street level, and the future BART track corridor will be trenched beneath the roadway, enhancing safety and reducing congestion for vehicular traffic, cyclists and pedestrians.
• A street-level bridge will be built above the BART track corridor.

Hostetter Road

• In the spring of 2013, traffic lanes on Hostetter Road, between Lundy Avenue and Flickinger Avenue, were temporarily shifted to the south side of the roadway to accommodate construction of half of the Hostetter Grade Separation at the BART corridor junction. Once the first portion of the Hostetter Road grade separation is completed late this summer, traffic lanes will shift to the north side of the thoroughfare so that crews can build the last half of the grade separation. The work will be completed by the end of 2013. A trench will then be constructed below Hostetter Road. When BART service commences, trains will travel beneath Hostetter. This is the first major construction activity to begin outside the Berryessa Station area.

Lundy Avenue/Sierra Road Intersection

• The intersection of Lundy Avenue and Sierra Road will remain intact at street level. The BART track corridor will be trenched beneath the intersection. This grade separation is an important element to enhancing safety at this busy intersection and reducing congestion for vehicular traffic, cyclists and pedestrians.
