Project Overview

BART Silicon Valley is an extension of the existing BART regional heavy rail system to Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara. The 16-mile BART Silicon Valley Project will be delivered through a phased approach.

The Berryessa Extension is the 10-mile, two-station, first phase of BART Silicon Valley. This extension of the BART system will begin south of the future BART Warm Springs Station in Fremont and proceed alongside the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) through Milpitas and end in the Berryessa area of north San Jose at Las Plumas Avenue. Engineering on the project is advancing, and full construction activities are scheduled to begin in 2012.

The two stations will feature:
  • Parking structures
  • Bus transit centers
  • Bike and pedestrian connections
  • Convenient access to BART System:
    - Half-mile walk for nearly 30,000 residents
    - Less than 12-minute bike ride for 260,000
    - 15-minutes via public transit or automobiles for more than 1,007,000 local residents

The Berryessa Extension Project is defined in the BART Silicon Valley Final Environmental Impact Statement.  Federal environmental clearance was received in June 2010. Currently, this first phase of BART Silicon Valley is in the federal New Starts program, and VTA is seeking $900 million in federal New Starts funding.

When both phases of BART Silicon Valley are complete, the 16-mile fully grade-separated project will include: six stations – one in Milpitas, four in San Jose and one in Santa Clara; a 5-mile tunnel in downtown San Jose; and a new maintenance and storage facility in Santa Clara.

  • Over 90,000 daily riders
  • BART trains arrive every 6 minutes
  • Fully grade separated (tracks separated from roads)
  • Intermodal connections to VTA light rail & buses, Caltrain, Altamont Commuter Express (ACE), Capitol Corridor, future Automated People Mover and High Speed Rail
  • Serves San Jose State University, HP Pavilion, Santa Clara University, Mineta SJ International Airport and other major employment, education and shopping centers throughout the county
