Program Overview - Enforcement

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be in charge of enforcement using a combination of new technologies and visual checks for occupancy (as with HOV lanes). Electronic toll collection systems include technology that receives a signal from a valid transponder. CHP can also use a handheld reader to ensure that the transponder on the vehicle is operating correctly. Revenue from Express Lanes will be used to support CHP enforcement.
