Body

VTA works closely with other area transit operators to provide convenient transfers for regional trips, including regional transfer locations and inter-operator transfer or fare agreements. 

 

Highway 17 Express

Paper Passes with Magnetic Stripe

Highway 17 Express Day Pass

  • Valid on all VTA Local and Limited Stop Buses, Light Rail and Historic Trolley Service, as well as all Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit Service
  • Valid as partial payment for VTA Express Adult Single-Ride

Highway 17 Express 31 Day Pass

  • Valid on all VTA Light Rail and non-Express buses
  • Can be used for Adult, Youth, Senior or Disabled fares during the calendar month and year shown
  • Valid as partial payment for VTA Express Adult Single-Ride

Slide the valid Highway 17 Express Day Pass or Highway 17 Express Pass magnetic stripe on VTA bus fare box to receive local fare credit.

  • Adult Express Single Ride: $2.50
  • Youth Single Ride:  No Charge
  • Youth Express Single Ride: No Charge
  • Senior/Disabled Single Ride: No Charge

Identification required for Youth or Senior/Disabled fares.

Transfers must be valid for the time period during which they are used.

Blue Cruz Electronic 1, 5 or 31-Day Passes

  • Valid for local fare credit on all VTA non-Express buses.
  • On VTA Express bus routes, a $2.50 upgrade fee will apply for Adult passengers. 
  • Valid on VTA Light Rail ONLY with a transfer requested from Highway 17 driver

Caltrain
  • Passengers with a valid Caltrain monthly pass on a Clipper card get a local fare credit that allows them to ride VTA Light Rail and non-Express buses for free when they tag their Clipper card.
  • VTA Express routes require a $2.50 upgrade fee for Adult Caltrain monthly pass holders which can only be paid by using cash fare pre-loaded on their Clipper card. Youth and Senior/Disabled/Medicare Caltrain monthly passes do not require an upgrade fee on VTA Express routes.
  • Caltrain one-way single ride tickets and Day Pass round-trip tickets are not eligible for transfer privileges or fare credit. 
  • Caltrain Go Pass stickers issued on company ID cards and Go passes on Clipper are not accepted on VTA.

BART

Adults using Clipper who board VTA within one hour of exiting the BART station will receive a fare credit of $0.50. Adults will be charged full fare for any ride on VTA after the initial discounted transfer.

  • Adult Express Single Ride: $4.50
  • Adult Local Single Ride: $2.00
  • Youth Single Ride: $1.25
  • Senior/Disabled Single Ride: $1.00

ACE

ACE passengers holding any valid ACE ticket or pass may ride free on all VTA bus and Light Rail service. ACE tickets are valid anywhere in the VTA service area, not just at ACE stations. ACE tickets are not valid for the Highway 17 Express, Dumbarton Express or Caltrain.

Monthly passes must have the current month and all other tickets must be validated with the current date to be valid.

Passes printed at home are not eligible for use on VTA services.

AC Transit

AC Transit (includes Dumbarton Express service) riders using Clipper who transfer within 2 hours of first boarding and tagging on an AC Transit bus receive one local fare credit valid on a VTA Light Rail or non-Express bus. 

Transferring to a VTA Express bus is free for youth and seniors and requires a $2.50 upgrade fee for adults that can be paid only with Clipper cash fare.

Dumbarton Bridge Express

The Dumbarton Bridge Express bus operates between the Stanford Research Park in Palo Alto and the Union City BART Station. Riders using Clipper who transfer within two hours of tagging on the Dumbarton Express receive one local fare credit at VTA bus stops shared with or located close to Dumbarton Express bus stops.

Fares on the Dumbarton Express can be paid with Clipper or cash (exact change only).

Monterey-Salinas Transit

The following Monterey-Salinas Transit Passes are valid for a local fare credit on VTA services:

  • 31-Day Discount Super GoPass
  • 7-Day Super GoPass
  • 7-Day Discount Super GoPass

Samtrans
  • VTA Monthly Pass customers using Clipper receive a local fare credit if they board SamTrans within 2 hours of first boarding and tagging their Clipper card on VTA. 
  • SamTrans Monthly Pass customers receive a local fare credit if they board VTA within 2 hours of first boarding and tagging on SamTrans.
  • Transferring to a VTA Express bus is free for youth and seniors and adults require a $2.50 upgrade that can be paid only with cash value on a Clipper card.

Capitol Corridor

Capitol Corridor transfers are accepted as a one-time local single-ride fare on VTA Light Rail and non-Express buses. The transfer is valid as partial fare on VTA Express buses.
