Detour of Northbound Route 87 "Mainline" Roadway

IMPORTANT NOTICE OF CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

EFFECTIVE: SEPTEMBER 12, 2005

What: Long-term detour of northbound Route 87 traffic onto the Downtown Connector. The Downtown Connector is the roadway that is parallel to and immediately east of the mainline that allows exits to Santa Clara and Julian Streets and accepts traffic from I-280.

As a result of this detour, congestion along northbound Route 87 is expected to increase, specifically during the morning commute. Below is a list of recommended alternate routes to access the Downtown area.

Detour : All northbound traffic will be detoured onto the Downtown Connector south of I-280. Northbound Route 87 traffic will then merge back onto the mainline roadway north of Julian Street.

When: Monday, September 12, 2005 and continuing through late 2006

Why: VTA will be detouring northbound Route 87 to construct an HOV (high occupancy vehicle or carpool) lane. The work will be done on northbound Route 87 between I-280 and Julian Street in Downtown San Jose.

In efforts to bring improvements to commuters as quickly as possible, VTA worked together with state and local agencies to discuss a plan to safely and efficiently expedite this project. By detouring northbound Route 87 “mainline” roadway traffic the contractor is given unrestricted access to northbound Route 87, which will save both construction time and money.

Alternate Routes to Downtown San Jose:

From Northbound I-280:

•  Take 11 th Street exit and go north to Santa Clara or Julian Street

•  Take 7 th Street exit and go north to Santa Clara or Julian Street

From Southbound I-280:

•  Take Bird Avenue exit and proceed north to Santa Clara or Julian Street

•  Take Almaden Road exit and proceed north to Santa Clara or Julian Street

From Northbound Route 87:

•  Take the San Carlos Street/Auzerais Avenue exit to either Almaden Boulevard or San Carlos Street

Alternates to Northbound Route 87:

•  Bird Avenue, Monterey/First Street and 11 th Street

Transit Alternatives:

Long-Term Closure of Park Avenue On-Ramp to Northbound Route 87:

What: Due to the northbound Route 87 mainline closure, the Park Avenue on-ramp will be closed for the duration of the detour.

Detour : Motorists will be detoured to northbound Almaden Boulevard, onto to Notre Dame Street to northbound Route 87.

When: Monday, September 12, 2005 and continuing through late 2006

Northbound Route 87 Off-Ramp to San Carlos Street/Auzerais Avenue:

What: Long-term closure of northbound Route 87 off-ramp to San Carlos Street/Auzerais Avenue in Downtown San Jose. This ramp will be closed to prepare the roadway for a detour that will go into effect once the mainline of northbound Route 87 is closed for construction.

Detour : Continue on northbound Route 87, exit Santa Clara Street/Julian Street (Downtown Connector), exit Santa Clara Street and turn right, turn right on Almaden Boulevard to San Carlos Street
