Dean J. Chu serves on the VTA Board of Directors representing the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), having been appointed to this position in 2007.  Ex-Officio Member Chu represents the cities of Santa Clara County on MTC.

Ex Officio Member Chu previously served on the VTA Board of Directors representing City Group 2 (the North County Cities of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale) from 2005-2007.  He served as the chairperson of the VTA Board of Directors during 2007, having been vice chairperson during 2006.  He represented VTA on the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors during 2006 and 2007.  He also served on VTA’s Policy Advisory Committee during 2004 and part of 2003, representing Sunnyvale.

Ex Officio Member Chu is currently a member of the Sunnyvale City Council, having been appointed on an interim basis to fill the seat of Councilmember Otto Lee during his temporary military deployment outside the U.S.  He previously served on the Sunnyvale City Council from 2003–2007 and served as the mayor of Sunnyvale during 2006.  During his time on the Sunnyvale City Council Mr. Chu served on the League of California Cities Transportation, Communications and Public Works State Policy Committee from 2005 to 2007 representing Santa Clara County and on the National League of Cities Transportation Services and Infrastructure Advocacy and Policy Committee during 2006 and 2007.

Prior civic service includes two years on the Sunnyvale Planning Commission.  His community service includes serving on the board of directors of Leadership Sunnyvale and as a board member of the Northwest YMCA.  He also actively supports many local organizations including the Sunnyvale Rotary Club, the Sunnyvale Historical Society, and the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce.

Ex Officio Member Chu was born in Southern California and raised in the Santa Clara Valley.  He is a graduate of what is now Santa Clara High School and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Political Science with a special emphasis on Public Administration and Public Policy.  He also holds a M.B.A. in Finance from Golden Gate University.  A long-time financial advisor, he has extensive experience in the banking industry and has worked at technology startup companies.
