 Alternate Member Matthews serves on the Santa Clara City Council.  He was elected to the council again in 2008, after having been previously elected in 1998 and 2002.

Prior civic service includes as a member of the City of Santa Clara Planning Commission, including one year as its chairperson.  He also served on the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail Committee.  His community service includes serving on numerous clubs and committees.

Alternate Member Matthews is a fifth generation resident of Santa Clara.   He is proud of his transportation roots that include a grandfather that drove the original inter-urban trolleys in the valley and, who, for 50 years, worked in the valley’s transit system.  Mr. Matthews currently works as Division Manager for the Code Enforcement Division of the City of San Jose’s Planning, Building & Code Enforcement Department, and has over 25 years of municipal experience.
