VTA Alternate Board Member

Milpitas Vice Mayor Pete McHugh serves the VTA Board of Directors as an alternate member representing City Group 4 (the cities of Gilroy, Milpitas, and Morgan Hill), having been appointed in 2010.   He serves as an alternate member on VTA’s Administration and Finance Committee, and represents VTA on the I-680 Sunol SMART Carpool Lane Joint Powers Board.  He also is a member of VTA’s Policy Advisory Committee, having represented the city of Milpitas since 2009.  In addition, he previously served as a VTA board member in 2000 and 2004 representing the County of Santa Clara, and served as a Board alternate member representing the County in 1997, 1999, 2001-2003, and 2005-2008.  He also represented the County on VTA’s Policy Advisory Committee for 2006-2008.

Alternate Member serves on the Milpitas City Council, having been elected in 2008.  He is serving as Milpitas’ vice mayor for 2010.

Prior civic service includes on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.  First elected in 1996, then again in 2000 and 2004, he represented Supervisorial District 3 (Alviso, Milpitas, Evergreen, the northern portion of Sunnyvale, and portions of North and East San José).  Prior to joining the Board of Supervisors, he served for twenty years on the Milpitas City Council.  He was first elected to the council in 1976, and in 1978 became the first elected mayor of Milpitas.  He then served as mayor and a city council member until his election to the Board of Supervisors in 1996.

Mr. McHugh was born in Boston, Massachusetts.  He attended Boston University's College of Business Administration and then moved to Southern California where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Los Angeles.  After 30 years of employment, he retired from IBM Corporation, having worked in the accounting and software development areas.
