| SUBJECT: |
Discussion of SB 1233 Legislation Related to Bicycles on County Expressways |
Part of the recently enacted SB1233 includes language that enables local jurisdictions to prohibit bicycling along any roadway designated as an “expressway.” This has raised concern in the local bicycling community and the BPAC because key parts of the county's bicycle network could be eliminated.
The BPAC requested this issue be placed on the committee’s agenda for discussion at its May 2005 meeting. The goal of this discussion is to explore possible remedies or identify a course of action to ensure that no bike routes are lost due to application of SB 1233.
SB 1233 was introduced by the Committee on Transportation (Senators Murray [Chair], Florez, Karnette, Perata, Scott, Soto, and Torlakson). On September 21, 2004, the State Legislature passed and the Governor signed into law SB 1233 (Statutes of 2004, Chapter 615). Copies of the Bill will be provided at the meeting.
