BOARD MEMORANDUM

 Board of Directors

THROUGH:Michael T. Burns
 General Manager

FROM:Carolyn M. Gonot
 Chief Development Officer

SUBJECT: 2006 Update of the Bicycle Technical Guidelines

FOR INFORMATION ONLY

The VTA Board of Directors adopted the Bicycle Technical Guidelines (BTG) in September 1999.  Since then, new issues have come up that need to be addressed in the guidelines. Examples of the new and revised information that will be incorporated into the BTG include:

  • New traffic control devices approved for use in California, including bicycle signal heads, and “Sharrow” pavement marking
  • New bicycle detection technologies
  • Improved pavement marking materials
  • Smart bike parking technology, such as e-lockers
  • Bike lanes at freeway overcrossings, such as those with and without shoulders, with and without exclusive right turn lanes, and for both moderate and high speeds.

The 2006 update also will include formatting, organizational, and editorial revisions to make the document more user-friendly.   Staff will form a guidelines task force comprised of BPAC and TAC members to assist with the update.

At the March 2006 BPAC meeting, staff will be requesting your formal input on needed BTG revisions.   If you have suggestions in advance of the meeting on March 8, 2006, please send them to Michelle DeRobertis at michelle.derobertis@vta.org or (408) 321- 5716 to be included in the committee discussion item.
