BOARD MEMORANDUM

TO: Board of Directors
 Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority

FROM:Board Member Pat Dando

SUBJECT: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

BACKGROUND:

In the United States, one out of four women will be assaulted by an intimate partner in their lifetime. In Santa Clara County alone, over 6,500 cases of domestic violence were reported last year, and 18 identified domestic violence related deaths were reported.

To increase awareness of domestic violence and its tragic results, October has been designated Domestic Violence Awareness Month.   In Santa Clara County events are planned throughout the month to educate and inform the public about domestic violence.

The Seventh Annual City of San Jose’s Elected and Public Officials Walk to End Domestic Violence will be held on Friday October 8th    and begins at San Jose City Hall at 9:00 a.m. Entitled, “Speak up, Save Lives”, this year’s walk is designed to raise awareness of the need for critical domestic violence programming and funding.

A half-day Domestic Violence Prevention Conference has been scheduled for Friday, October 22nd   at the San Jose Marriott. Participants will engage in dialogue about existing family/domestic violence efforts and will strategize about prevention efforts to effectively address domestic violence issues in Santa Clara County.

It is important for the Board of Directors to recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to support the events planned for our community.
