Transit Mechanic

The Position

 Hourly Salary Range:  $30.20 - $34.32  

NOTE: A Current DMV (Within 30 Days) Printout Of Your Driving Record Must Be Submitted At The Time Of Application.

Under general supervision, the Transit Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work as required, diagnoses, maintains, repairs, services, inspects, and tests VTA buses and support vehicles. This is a safety sensitive position.

Minimum Qualifications

Sufficient education, training, and experience which demonstrates possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma; and
  • Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of diesel powered heavy equipment (such as diesel trucks and buses) or equivalent experience.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and the ability to qualify for and maintain a Class B license with Passenger (P) endorsement.
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and odd and unusual hours.

Knowledge of

  • Theory, operation, and repair of diesel powered vehicles, including engines, transmissions, ignitions, and electrical hydraulic/pneumatic cooling, heating, and brake systems;
  • Industrial safety rules, shop safety rules, regulations, and procedures as applicable to a bus maintenance facility;
  • General shop safety procedures;
  • Basic equipment and tools used in the maintenance and repair of large vehicles.

Ability to

  • Perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, diagnostic procedures and safety/preventative maintenance inspections in relation to a variety of VTA buses and related equipment;
  • Adjust and install engine components;
  • Maintain and install lighting circuits, alarms, safety circuits, interlocks, ignition systems, environmental systems, and related components;
  • Give oral and written instructions and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Familiarize other Service Mechanics, Service Workers and other classifications in the proper method of performing their job;
  • Properly use test and other shop equipment/tools, including oxy/acetylene and arc welding equipment;
  • Prepare written reports, document defects and repairs on inspection forms, work orders, or designated computer programs
  • Perform computer-related functions that allow for data input and retrieval;
  • Effectively read, understand, and use technical information found in repair manuals, service change bulletins, and applicable technical documents, including parts and supply manuals;
  • Operate a variety of equipment, i.e. forklifts, scissor lifts, etc.;
  • Learn and stay current on all new technologies introduced into the transit industries as it relates to bus maintenance;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of business.

Examination

The examination will include one or more of the following parts: application appraisal, supplemental screening, written examination, oral examination, and/or performance test.

Applicants for employment must be willing to be fingerprinted for the purpose of obtaining “Summary Criminal History Conviction Information” from State and Federal record agencies.
 
In accordance with federal regulation 49 CFR PART 40.25, VTA is required to obtain all information regarding any positive drug test results, any alcohol test results of .04 or above, any refusal to test, and any records of evaluation and/or treatment resulting from such tests from current, previous, and potential employers for the past two years.
 
You will be required to complete and sign a “Drug and Alcohol Background Check Consent Form” if you are offered this position.
 
All job applicants selected for appointment to this position are subject to pre-employment drug testing. A final job applicant will be tested for five prohibited drugs (and their metabolites): cocaine, PCP, amphetamines, marijuana, and opiates.

Employees are vested in a pension plan upon attaining ten (10) years of paid service.
 
Social Security taxes will be deducted from each employee’s bi-weekly salary.

As a condition of employment, each employee in this class must sign a payroll deduction authorization form providing for deduction of union membership dues or a service fee.
