The Position
Monthly Salary Range: $5,345.67 (Step 1) - $6,466.16 (Step 5)
(Position is typically filled at Step 1.)
Under general supervision, the Light Rail Signal Maintainer performs complex and varied advanced, journey- level duties in the maintenance and repair of signaling and rail safety systems, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) hardware, software and network devices, ticket vending equipment controllers and network devices, and other electrical equipment. This is a Safety Sensitive Position and may require work at irregular hours and subject to being on call 24 hours a day.
Minimum Qualifications
Development of the required knowledge, skills and abilities is typically obtained through:

Completion of a two year program at a recognized academic, trade or vocational school or completion of an apprenticeship in the trade;

Three years of journey-level experience in the inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic and communications systems; and

Possession of a valid California Driver’s license.
Knowledge of
Theories, practices, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic, supervisory control and communications systems, and devices applicable to a light rail system; Practices, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the testing, calibration, maintenance and repair of signal and safety systems; laws, ordinances and regulations governing electrical construction; network communications principles and standard communication hardware and devices, including servers, hubs, routers, switches, controllers, fiber optics and related equipment, multiplexors and modems; communications network standards, protocols and wiring schemes; standard test devices and electronic tools.
Ability to
Read and interpret plans, specifications, blue prints, schematics, and manuals; use electronic and electrical test equipment, tools, and materials to test, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair a wide variety of equipment, machinery, devices and systems safely and efficiently; adapt established practices, procedures, and principles of electronic and electrical circuitry to particular problems, conditions and service needs; prepare accurate and complete reports and records of work performed; exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines; perform physical labor; provide lead work direction and train others in work to be performed; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work.
Examination
The examination will include one or more of the following parts: application appraisal, application review, supplemental screening, written test, leaderless group discussion, in-basket examination, and/or oral test.

In accordance with federal regulation 49 CFR PART 40.25, VTA is required to obtain all information regarding any positive drug test results, any alcohol test results of .04 or above, any refusal to test, and any records of evaluation and/or treatment resulting from such tests from current, previous, and potential employers for the past two years.

- Describe in detail your educational experience in the trade and how it directly relates to meeting the minimum qualifications for this position.
- Describe your experience in troubleshooting electronic equipment. Specify if this was down to the component level.
- Describe your experience with electrical, electronic and mechanical maintenance and repair of light and heavy rail signal systems, crossing gates, fare machines, communication systems, audio/video equipment, wheelchair lifts, track switch machines and various lighting systems.
- Describe your experience with fiber optics and networking.

VTA contributes to the Public Employees Retirement System for the 2% at 55 Plan; and pays the employee’s regular contribution of approximately 7%. The 7% contribution can be refunded to an employee who resigns prior to retirement.
Social Security taxes will be deducted from each employee’s bi-weekly salary.
As a condition of employment, each employee in this class must sign a payroll deduction authorization form providing for deduction of union membership dues or a service fee.
