Light Rail Signal Supervisor

Monthly Salary Range: $6,649.97 (Step 1) - $8,085.02 (Step 5)

The Position

Position is typically filled at Step 1.

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, supervises and coordinates maintenance and repair of signaling and rail safety systems, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) hardware, software and network devices, ticket vending machine controllers and network devices and other electrical equipment for a light rail system; and performs related duties as assigned. Responds to calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Minimum Qualifications

Development of the required knowledge, skills and abilities is typically obtained through completion of a recognized apprenticeship program; and six years of progressively responsible experience in electrical/electronic maintenance, including at least one year supervising or functioning as a team leader in the maintenance and repair of railway or traffic signals.

Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the State of California and the ability to maintain insurability under the Agency’s Vehicle Insurance policy.

Knowledge of

  • Principles and practices of supervision; 
  • Agency human resource policies and labor contract provisions;
  • Theories, practices, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic, supervisory control and communications systems and devices applicable to a light rail system; 
  • Practices, methods, techniques, tools, and equipment used in the testing, calibration, maintenance and repair of signal and safety systems; 
  • Laws, ordinances and regulations governing electrical construction; 
  • Network communication principles and standard communication hardware and devices, including servers, hubs, routers, switches, controllers, fiber optics and related equipment, multiplexors and modems; 
  • Communications network standards, protocols and wiring schemes; 
  • Standard test devices and electronic tools.  

Ability to

  • Plan, organize, assign, and monitor the work of unit employees;
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications, blue prints, schematics, and manuals;
  • Use electronic and electrical test equipment, tools and materials to test, diagnose, troubleshoot and repair a wide variety of equipment, machinery, devices and systems safely and efficiently;
  • Adapt established practices, procedures, and principles of electronic and electrical circuitry to particular problems, conditions and service needs;
  • Prepare accurate and complete reports and records of work performed;
  • Evaluate alternatives and develop cost-effective maintenance and repair processes and preventive maintenance programs;
  • Develop reasonable and comprehensive estimates of costs for time, labor and materials for maintenance and repair work orders;
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, public safety personnel, contractors, vendors, the public and others encountered in the course of work.

Examination

The examination will include one or more of the following parts: application appraisal, supplemental screening, written examination, oral examination, and/or performance test.

Applicants for employment must be willing to be fingerprinted for the purpose of obtaining “Summary Criminal History Conviction Information” from State and Federal record agencies.

In accordance with federal regulation 49 CFR PART 40.25, VTA is required to obtain all information regarding any positive drug test results, any alcohol test results of .04 or above, any refusal to test, and any records of evaluation and/or treatment resulting from such tests from current, previous, and potential employers for the past two years.

You will be required to complete and sign a “Drug and Alcohol Background Check Consent Form” if you are offered this position.

All job applicants selected for appointment to this position are subject to pre-employment drug testing. A final job applicant will be tested for five prohibited drugs (and their metabolites): cocaine, PCP, amphetamines, marijuana, and opiates.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) also contributes to the Public Employees Retirement System for the 2% at 55 Plan and pays the employee’s regular contribution of approximately 7%. The 7% contribution can be refunded to an employee who resigns prior to retirement.

Social Security taxes will be deducted from each employee’s bi-weekly salary.
