Abdul Bhatti

eisty 80 year-old Abdul Bhatti sits calmly waiting for Community Bus 39 at VTA’s Eastridge Transit Center to take him to his community center off San Felipe Road in San Jose. It’s a cool and crisp California afternoon and he is bundled up appropriately; ready for a cozy ride. Bhatti has a book and the valley section of the San Jose Mercury News in a brown bag next to him. On average, his bus trip lasts about 45-minutes, and he couldn’t think of a better way to make use of his free time.
“For about $20 dollars every month, it’s very convenient. I take VTA to Barnes and Noble at Eastridge Mall, to Kaiser in Santa Clara, have tea with friends, just everywhere,” said Bhatti, his eyes twinkling with pride.
Formerly with the Naval Exchange at Moffet Field, Bhatti retired eleven years ago and is now enjoying life. That zest for life is due to his independence. Although Bhatti stopped driving in 2002, his daily routine is filled with trips around the valley. Bhatti is an avid user of the local public transportation system. He compares his experience with other transit systems and claims VTA is certainly the best.
“I live with my son, who has a home in Evergreen, and taking VTA is a very positive option for seniors like me, especially in this area. I’m really happy with the community buses that VTA adopted last year.”
When asked if there was anything he’d change about VTA, he took a moment to ponder the question and then with a mischievous smile he stated, “My community bus is always full; maybe VTA should consider adding another bus. That would make my ride home perfect.” And with that, he stood up and was off to his next destination.
