nr12-06_2007: VTA and SamTrans Implement New Transfer Agreement

VTA and SamTrans Implement New Transfer Agreement

Release Number:   nr12-06_2007
Release Date:   December 13, 2007

San Jose, Calif. – At the December 13, 2007 Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Board of Directors meeting, the Board unanimously approved a Transfer Agreement with the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans).   The agreement provides customers utilizing either of the transit systems in Palo Alto or Menlo Park, free transfers from one system to the other with a SamTrans monthly Pass or a VTA monthly or day pass.

On January 14, 2008, VTA will implement major changes to its bus routing and scheduling.   The changes are the result of an 18-month study that identified key markets and destinations, in an effort to improve service, enhance operational efficiencies and build ridership.   A segment of VTA’s bus route 22 which previously extended into Menlo Park will be eliminated, and as a result VTA and SamTrans will no longer share any stops in San Mateo County.

Equally important to instituting a more efficient utilized transit system, is the dedication to provide good customer service.   The existing transfer agreement between the two transit agencies applied to shared stops.    The new agreement will eliminate the need of most passengers transferring between systems to buy additional fares, and also allows for the inclusion of a SamTrans Day Pass if one is implemented.  For express routes, each system will provide a base fare credit for passengers presenting the other agency’s month or day pass.
