CDM, Virginia Stations Closing for Platform Retrofits
| Release Number: | nr02-06_2008 |
| Release Date: | February 21, 2008 |
San Jose— On Monday, February 25, 2008, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will temporarily close two light rail stations—the Children’s Discovery Museum (CDM) and Virginia stations—as a new phase of its Platform Retrofit Project begins. Both stations are scheduled to reopen in late April.
Users of these two stations are urged to call VTA Customer Service at (408) 321-2300 for personalized trip planning services.
Alternate VTA light rail service for the CDM Station is available at the Convention Center Station two blocks to the east or from VTA Bus Route 23, which runs frequently on San Carlos Street. Alternate VTA light rail service for the Virginia Station is available at the Tamien Station, or from VTA Bus Route 25, which runs frequently on Willow Street, two blocks to the south.
The platform retrofit project eases the boarding and exiting of light rail vehicles by raising station platforms and eliminating the eight inch difference between platform and vehicle. The current need to step up into a vehicle limits access for mobility impaired individuals and requires them to utilize a lift or ramp to board the train. Once a station is retrofitted, level boarding will be available at each doorway of every light rail vehicle.
The retrofit project includes 13 light rail stations: Children’s Discovery Museum, Virginia, Tamien, Curtner, Capitol, Branham, Ohlone/Chynoweth, Oakridge, Almaden, Blossom Hill, Snell, Cottle and Santa Teresa. Work on these stations will progress in a north to south direction and is scheduled to be completed in March 2009. These are the final stations within VTA’s 42-mile light rail system requiring retrofitting.
A tentative schedule of station construction and closures is posted on VTA’s website, www.vta.org, in the “projects” section. Information on substitute bus service during construction can be obtained by calling VTA Customer Service at (408) 321-2300; TDD only, (408) 321-2330.
