| Release Number: | nr03-03_2008 |
| Release Date: | March 11, 2008 |
San Jose, Calif. – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is set to receive $12.1 million in state funding following an announcement by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger over the weekend. The money is part of $394 million in Proposition 1B bond funding for 106 transit projects statewide approved by voters in 2006. The funding earmarked for California’s Transit Projects, aims to keep the economy moving and protect the environment. In total the projects are expected to create some 7,200 jobs statewide.
VTA is pleased with the state support which helps support the first step towards a future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System in Santa Clara County. VTA will use the $12.1 million towards design improvements along the Santa Clara/Alum Rock Corridor Project, which will be used by two BRT lines. VTA believes the effort will help revitalize the surrounding areas, neighborhoods and business districts along the corridor in San Jose.
One of three transit corridors identified in the Downtown East Valley Transit Improvement Plan, the Santa Clara/Alum Rock Corridor currently has the highest ridership throughout VTA’s system. The 7-mile corridor extends east from San Jose Diridon Station along Santa Clara Street continuing east on Alum Rock Avenue and terminates at the Eastridge Transit Center.
Background
In October 2007, the VTA Board of Directors approved BRT as the near-term development strategy for the Santa Clara/Alum Rock Corridor. The BRT project will be designed and constructed to light rail standards to allow for flexibility to convert BRT to light rail in the future. Proposition 1B is a $19.9 billion transportation bond. This latest round of funding marks the first of two annual funding cycles from the bond’s $3.6 billion Public Transportation Modernization Improvement and Service Enhancement Account. More than $1.6 billion has already been allocated under Proposition 1B.
