| Release Number: | nr03-08 |
| Release Date: | March 27, 2008 |
San Jose, Calif. – The Milpitas Police and Fire Departments, along with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) are working together to address safety issues. The Milpitas Police Department’s Emergency Response Team, Special Operations Unit participated in a tactical police training exercise and the Fire Department completed the last leg of their training at the Guadalupe Light Rail Division yesterday.
In order to understand how VTA can offer assistance to Milpitas Police and Fire during emergency situations, the training entailed familiarization with the low floor layout of the Kinki-Sharyo Light Rail Vehicle, including how to manipulate the doors, gain rapid entry into the vehicle, search techniques and emergency evacuation procedures for first responders. The exercise also covered VTA’s 40 foot Motor Coach. Both the light rail vehicle and the motor coach operate in the City of Milpitas.
The Special Operations Unit is made up of highly trained police officers from the Milpitas Police Department’s Emergency Response Team. Earlier in March, Milpitas Fire Department had completed two shift training efforts and finished their third shift for fire responders yesterday. As part of its presentation, VTA provided hands-on training and materials from previous exercises to participants.
