Station by Station Directions for Friday Light Rail Closure

Release Number:   nr08-08
Release Date:   August 19, 2008

San Jose, Calif. – A free “bus bridge” will replace light rail service in downtown San Jose this weekend, as worn light rail track is replaced where northbound and southbound tracks cross at the intersection of Devine and First streets, according to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA).

The shutdown will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 22 and last until early Monday morning, August 25. Although the shutdown of light rail service between Convention Center and Civic Center stations will affect the Friday afternoon commute, it is not expected to impact the Monday morning commute.

Here are some helpful directions for Friday afternoon commuters.

Northbound to Mountain View or Alum Rock train riders:

Convention Center Station
Riders beginning their northbound light rail trip at Convention Center Station, and passengers already aboard northbound trains, will board the bus bridge at this location. The bus bridge bus stop is across from the light rail station, in front of the Convention Center. The bus bridge will stop at each station to drop off and pick up passengers until it reaches Civic Center, where passengers can again access light rail.

San Antonio, Santa Clara and St. James stations
The bus bridge vehicle will stop at the First Street platforms for each station to drop off and pick up passengers until it reaches Civic Center, where passengers can again access light rail.

Japantown/Ayer
Northbound passengers ending their trip at this station will be dropped of at a temporary bus stop located on Third and Empire streets. Northbound light rail passengers beginning their light rail trip at Japantown/Ayer will be able to board either Mountain View or Alum Rock trains

Note: Civic Center is the preferred access point for these trains due to the higher level of pedestrian and bus amenities available at that location.

Civic Center Station
Northbound passengers on the bus bridge will be able to board either Mountain View or Alum Rock trains at this station, as will passengers beginning their northbound trip at Civic Center.

Southbound to Winchester and Santa Teresa:

Civic Center
Riders beginning their southbound light rail trip at Civic Center Station, and passengers already aboard southbound trains, will board the bus bridge at this location. The bus bridge bus stop is located on the west side of First Street, across from the light rail station. The bus bridge will stop at each station to drop off and pick up passengers until it reaches Convention Center, where passengers can again access light rail.

Note: Southbound to Winchester and Santa Teresa passengers already aboard a train are urged to board the bus bridge at Civic Center because of the more limited pedestrian and bus amenities at Japantown/Ayer.

Japantown/Ayer
Southbound passengers beginning their light rail trip at Japantown/Ayer, or any southbound riders still aboard a Santa Teresa or Winchester train, will board the bus bridge bus stop on the west side of First Street, across from the light rail station.

St. James, Santa Clara and San Antonio stations
The bus bridge vehicle will stop at the Second Street platforms for each station to drop off and pick up passengers until it reaches Convention Center, where passengers can again access light rail.

Convention Center Station
Southbound passengers on the bus bridge will be able to board either Winchester or Santa Teresa trains at this station, as will passengers beginning their southbound trip at Convention Center.
