VTA Promotes Bike to Work Day on May 12 in Milpitas
VTA Encourages Public to Bike and Take Public Transit
| Release Number: | NR 11 05 06 |
| Release Date: | May 10, 2011 |
San Jose, Calif. — The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) staff will be cheering on bicyclists at the Great Mall/Main Transit Center in Milpitas on Thursday, May 12, as part of promoting Bike to Work Day (BTWD) activities in Silicon Valley.
At a BTWD kick-off event earlier in the week, City of Mountain View Councilmember and VTA Chair Margaret Abe-Koga said, "Bicycling to work is a great opportunity to try another mode of transportation, save the planet, and get some exercise."
This Thursday, between 5:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., VTA staff will greet bicyclists at an energizer station at the Great Mall/Main Transit Center in Milpitas. They will support bicyclists with refreshments and snacks. In addition, VTA staff will hand out bike maps and information about the benefits of other commute options.
Bicycling and using public transit are immediate ways for individuals to be healthier and can help contribute toward leaving a smaller carbon footprint. For instance, a 2 car family can reduce their carbon emissions by 10% when they replace 1 car by taking public transportation. Riding a bicycle or walking to a bus or light rail station is an activity that can burn off more calories than driving a car!
VTA makes it convenient for bicyclists to take public transit. VTA buses and light rail cars have racks dedicated just for bicycles. For instructions on how to easily place a bicycle on a VTA bus, see a video by visiting www.vta.org/multimedia. Moreover, there are 111 retrofitted automated, easy-to-use lockers available at 12 light rail stations throughout the county.
For more information about VTA bus and light rail service, please use the trip planner or contact VTA Customer Service at (408) 321-2300; for the hearing impaired, please call the TTY line at (408) 321-2330.
