VTA Invites Community Members to Provide Input on Environmental Process for BART Silicon Valley

Release Number:   NR 12 10 02
Release Date:   Dec 06, 2010

San Jose, Calif. – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is providing an opportunity for members of the public to provide input on the Draft 2nd Supplemental Environmental Impact Report (SEIR) for the BART Silicon Valley project.

The Draft 2nd SEIR focuses on the 10-mile Berryessa Extension, the first phase of extending BART to Silicon Valley and identifies the environmental impacts resulting from proposed design changes that have occurred since the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Report certification in June 2007.

The design changes include a discussion on how the project will be built in phases. A presentation will be given on the status of BART Silicon Valley, with more specifics about the first phase. The first phase consists of the first 10-miles of BART Silicon Valley, beginning from just south of the future BART Warm Springs Station in Fremont through Milpitas to the Berryessa area of north San Jose. The Draft 2nd SEIR addresses changes in the project design for the first phase only.

Members of the community are invited to attend the public hearing to occur:
Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.
Milpitas Senior Center
40 Milpitas Blvd, Milpitas

This location is served by VTA Bus Line 47 and AC Transit 217.

The presentation will be followed by an opportunity to enter formal comments into the public record. Those unable to attend the meeting can provide written comments to VTA, which will be accepted until December 17, 2010. Comments can be sent via email at bartsv-seir2@vta.org, via fax at (408) 321-5787 or mail to:

About BART Silicon Valley

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) to Silicon Valley Project is an extension of the existing BART system to San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara. This project plans to extend the current BART system 16 miles beginning at the future BART Warm Springs Station in Fremont and proceed on the former Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way through Milpitas to south of Mabury Road in San Jose. The extension would then descend into a 5.1 mile-long subway tunnel, continue through downtown San Jose, and end at grade in Santa Clara near the Caltrain Station. A maintenance and vehicle storage yard would be at the terminus of the project in Santa Clara.
