San Jose, Calif. – The City of Cupertino and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority won a distinguished transportation award for the Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge project. The California Transportation Foundation made the announcement yesterday.
“This award is a wonderful symbol of collaboration between the City of Cupertino, VTA, and many other partners to meet a community’s need,” said Sam Liccardo, San Jose City Councilmember and VTA Chair. “With the bridge’s utility and beauty, the Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge is a wonderful asset for Santa Clara County and the state of California.”
On April 30, 2009, this bridge opened a key arterial for bicyclists and pedestrians in Santa Clara County. The bridge serves north-south bike commuters, including residents heading to jobs in Silicon Valley as well as DeAnza college students traveling to class. The footbridge is the final connector of two sections of the Stevens Creek Trail, which promotes exercise and improves the health of users through increased physical activity. It is anticipated that 126,000 bicyclists and 65,000 pedestrians will use this bridge every year.
“The Mary Ave Bridge represents the very best of what local government can accomplish through regional collaboration. It is important that we continue to invest in transportation infrastructure for people, not just cars,” said Cupertino Mayor Kris Wang.
The project enjoyed widespread support from the community, including the Cupertino and Sunnyvale City Councils, both cities' Bicycle and Pedestrian Commissions and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). The footbridge was identified as a high priority project in VTA's Countywide Bicycle Plan.
