Weekend Work to Affect Convention Center Station & San Carlos Street
San Jose, Calif. – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) announced three weekends of construction activity (October 24-25, October 31-November 1, and November 7-8) in downtown San Jose that will require the closure of the Convention Center Light Rail Station each weekend and partial closure of the Market and San Carlos Streets intersection one weekend (October 24-25) and the partial closure of Almaden Boulevard and San Carlos Street intersection on another weekend (November 7-8).
Crews will be replacing worn light rail track at each intersection, a significant undertaking because the track at these locations is firmly embedded in concrete. Crews will work continuously beginning Friday night each weekend through early Monday morning, with the intersection reopening before the Monday morning commute.
During each of the three weekends of construction activity, there will be no light rail service provided between the Children’s Discovery Museum Station and the Paseo de San Antonio Light Rail Station. VTA will instead offer free, substitute bus service between the two stations and to and from the closed Convention Center Station.
Only passengers who would normally travel through, begin or end their light rail trip at Convention Center Station will need to use the substitute bus service. All other portions of the VTA Light Rail system will be operating at normal weekend service levels and frequency. VTA, however, does urge those riders that will be affected by the construction to allow extra time for their trip during the weekend closures, as the bus service between stations may cause a small delay for them.
Downtown motorists and pedestrians will also experience some impacts from the construction work. On the weekend of October 24, Market Street will be closed at San Carlos Street. Vehicles and pedestrians wishing to cross San Carlos Street at this intersection will have to turn right and detour one block. San Carlos Street, however, will remain open at all times.
On the weekend of October 31, traffic and pedestrian impacts are expected to be minimal, since crews won’t be working in either intersection.
On the weekend of November 7, Almaden Boulevard will be closed at San Carlos Street. Again, vehicles and pedestrians wishing to cross San Carlos Street will have to turn right and detour one block. San Carlos Street itself will remain open at all times.
