VTA Night & Weekend Track Work to Affect Downtown SJ

Temporary Closure for Convention Center Light Rail Station Minor Detours at Intersection of Market and San Carlos Streets Continuous Construction Activity Scheduled Throughout the Weekend

Release Number:   nr 09 10 06
Release Date:   Oct 20, 2009

WHO:  Weekend motorists and pedestrians travelling on Market Street at San Carlos Street. VTA light rail riders traveling to, from, or through Convention Center Light Rail Station (all other VTA light rail passengers are unaffected by the construction).

WHY:  Three sections of aging light rail track running in the median of San Carlos Street between Market Street and Almaden Boulevard in downtown San Jose need to be removed and replaced.

WHAT:  The work will take place over three consecutive weekends (one weekend at each site). At any one time, 15 to 20 workers will be on site using jack hammers, back hoes, excavators, haul trucks and other power equipment. The work will be continuous from late Friday night until early Monday morning.

At least one lane of traffic in either direction on San Carlos Street is expected to remain open at all times throughout the construction period, while Market Street traffic will be detoured one block when it reaches San Carlos Street.

During the work, the Convention Center Light Rail Station will be closed and free substitute bus service will be provided around the construction work. The “bus bridge” will serve these four downtown San Jose light rail stations: Children’s Discovery Museum, Convention Center, Paseo de San Antonio and Santa Clara. The bus bridge will be in service from approximately 11 p.m. Friday until the end of the service day on Sunday.

Trains travelling to the Winchester Light Rail Station, during the weekend closures of Convention Center Station, will temporarily make stops at the Children’s Discovery Museum Station in order to provide access to the substitute bus service.

VTA urges passengers needing to use the free substitute bus service to allow extra time for their trips on these days, as the transportation provided by the bus will be somewhat slower than what is normally provided by light rail.

More information is available for light rail riders on VTA’s website, www.vta.org. Riders can also contact VTA Customer Service at (408) 321-2300, TTY only (408) 321-2330. From the 650 area code and South Santa Clara County, call (800) 894-9908.
