Second Weekend of Work for San Carlos Rail Rehab Project
54 Hours of Continuous Construction near Market Street in Downtown SJ Convention Center Light Rail Station Closed, Minor Traffic Detours A Third Weekend of Work, at Almaden Boulevard, Still to Come
| Release Number: | nr 09 10 11 |
| Release Date: | Oct 28, 2009 |
WHO: Weekend motorists and pedestrians using the intersection of Market and San Carlos streets. VTA light rail riders traveling to, from, or through Convention Center Light Rail Station.
Note: VTA light rail passengers beginning and ending their light rail trip north of the Convention Center Station will be unaffected by the construction.
WHY: Three sections of aging light rail track running in the median of San Carlos Street between Market Street and Almaden Boulevard in downtown San Jose require replacement.
WHAT: This is the second of three consecutive weekends (one weekend at each site) of rail replacement work in the downtown San Jose area. At any one time, 15 to 20 workers will be on site using jack hammers, back hoes, excavators, haul trucks and other power equipment. The work will be continuous from late Friday night until early Monday morning.
At least one lane of traffic in either direction on San Carlos Street is expected to remain open at all times throughout the weekend construction period, while Market Street traffic will be detoured one block when it reaches San Carlos Street.
During the work, the Convention Center Light Rail Station will be closed and free substitute bus service will be provided around the
construction work. The “bus bridge” will serve these four downtown San Jose light rail stations: Children’s Discovery Museum, Convention Center, Paseo de San Antonio, and Santa Clara. The bus bridge will be in service from Friday evening until the tracks are reopened late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
Trains travelling to the Winchester Light Rail Station, during the weekend closures of Convention Center Station, will temporarily make stops at the Children’s Discovery Museum Station in order to provide access to the substitute bus service.
VTA urges passengers needing to use the free substitute bus service to allow extra time for their trips on these days.
