VTA Promotes Safety During Halloween and Daylight Savings
Agency Reminds Residents of its Safety Programs
| Release Number: | nr 09 10 12 |
| Release Date: | Oct 30, 2009 |
San Jose, Calif. –The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) wants everyone to be safe this Halloween and consider public transportation as an alternative to navigating the roadways. With trick-or-treating kids and darker days expected, VTA is an ideal choice for commuters and holiday revelers.
VTA’s service will not be impacted by Daylights Savings, Sunday November 1, 2009. Specifically, Bus Line 22, a 24-hour bus service line running from Eastridge Transit Center to Palo Alto Transit Center will provide service as normal. VTA plans on scheduling extra buses to accommodate the extra hour that Daylight Savings incurs.
“Safety is a priority at VTA and we promote that commitment through various programs established to help our passengers and the community,” said Dan Smith, Chief Operating Officer.
VTA participates in the Safe Place Program, meaning any child or person in need of assistance can turn to a VTA bus operator for help. Those in need can include runaways, the homeless, the abused and or neglected, and victims of domestic violence. The VTA bus operator will offer a “safe place” for them and ensure their safety and security. The bus operator will request a pick up for the child or victim, who will be taken to a location that can further assist them, such as the Bill Wilson Center, which provides services to youths, EHC Lifebuilders, a local shelter, or other designated centers.
In addition, VTA also offers a Night Stop Program. As a safety measure, a VTA bus operator can stop at a location that is closer to a passenger’s final destination than the regular stop, providing it is along the designated route. This service is available after evening peak hours until the morning rush hour, and is for deboarding only. It is available upon request and will be provided only when and where the operator feels it is safe to pull over.
