VTA Foots Construction Cost for Freeway Ped Crossing

Release Number:   nr04-08
Release Date:   Apr 21, 2009

Borregas Avenue Crossings Built by Sunnyvale, Funded by VTA

San José, Calif. – On Wednesday, the City of Sunnyvale dedicates a pair of badly-needed pedestrian/bicyclist overcrossings over two local freeways. The city oversaw the construction, while the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority funded much of the construction cost.

City of Sunnyvale Vice Mayor Christopher Moylan, who also serves as a member of the VTA Policy Advisory Committee and as an alternate member of the VTA Board of Directors, will speak at the dedication ceremony being held April 22, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at 1143 Borregas Avenue in Sunnyvale.

"By giving cyclists a safe and pleasant route over these freeways, we will make it practical for more people to bike to work in Sunnyvale."

While VTA is best known as the county’s public transportation provider, it also serves as the area’s congestion management agency. As such, it funds sustainable, accessible, and community focused transportation options, including bike and pedestrian improvements.

The majority of the funding—$6.7 million—for the two Borregas Avenue crossings, one over U.S. 101 and the second over S.R. 237, came from VTA’s Bicycle Expenditure Plan (BEP), a 25-year plan of bicycle improvements throughout Santa Clara County. The $99 million plan was developed with input from local cities and the county and prioritizes the expenditure of both local and regional funds.

Also assisting with development of the plan was VTA’s 16-member Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and each city in the county.

A second pedestrian bridge also built largely with VTA BEP funding is the Mary Avenue crossing over Interstate 280 between Cupertino and Sunnyvale. That overcrossing is tentatively slated to open April 30, 2009.
