Agency Recognized for Alleviating Major Traffic Congestion
San Jose, Calif. — The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA)’s State Route (SR) 152/156 Improvement Project received the Project of the Year Award by the American Public Works Association (APWA) South Bay Chapter today. The project is recognized for good construction management techniques, overall safety performance record, and completion of the project on schedule.
“VTA continues to provide transportation solutions aimed at easing congestion for residents and this award is a testament of our good planning, design and execution," said VTA General Manager Michael T. Burns.
The SR 152/156 Improvement Project reconfigured the hazardous, heavily traveled intersection of State Routes 152 and 156, to enhance safety and relieve traffic congestion. The intersection is considered crucial for commute and freight traffic traveling between Interstate 5 in the Central Valley and U.S. 101 in Silicon Valley. VTA, along with design consultant Biggs Cardosa Associates, designed a one lane grade-separated flyover construction structure for eastbound Route 152 motorists that allow westbound Route 156 motorists to pass safely beneath. The flyover (overpass) portion of the project was completed August 28, 2008, on budget and six weeks ahead of schedule. In addition, the mobility and safety features of the project included construction of a ground-level connector ramp, removal of a left turn stop sign, and realigning the roadway at the intersection of westbound SR 152 to westbound SR 156. Work on the two-year long, $34.8 million project was completed in April
2009. Overall, the project has alleviated traffic congestion and enhanced safety at an interchange known as one of the area’s most dangerous highway intersections.
