VTA to Implement Annual Transit Service Plan

Release Number:   nr06-10
Release Date:   Jun 25, 2009

Service Changes Effective July 13, 2009

San Jose, Calif. —Following the completion of an extensive community outreach effort in January 2009, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) plans to implement service changes on Monday, July 13, 2009. The changes stem from public input on VTA’s Annual Transit Service Plan, a review of transit services. The planned service modifications will impact more than 40 VTA bus routes.

“VTA relies on passenger feedback to improve our bus and light rail service,” said VTA General Manager Michael T. Burns.

Among the major VTA service changes are the discontinuation of Line 15 in Morgan Hill, frequency modifications and rerouting of several bus lines. Specifically, Lines 14 and 17 will be restructured to provide two-way service instead of a one-way loop in Gilroy. The frequency on both lines will also be increased to 30 minutes service on weekdays. Lines 66 and 68 weekday service will be improved to operate every 15 minutes over the entire routes.

Express 180 will operate only between Fremont BART and the Great Mall using the current routing every 30 minutes during the day and 60 minutes in the evening on weekdays. Express 180 will continue operating between Fremont BART, Great Mall and downtown San Jose on weekends. Express 181 will operate on Stevenson Boulevard and Interstate 880 (instead of Interstate 680) to reduce travel time between downtown San Jose and Fremont. It will operate all day and evening on weekdays with 15 minutes frequency during peak hours, 30 minutes frequency during the midday and hourly frequency in the evening. A new Park & Ride Lot location will be available at Stevenson Boulevard and Civic Center Drive.

In addition, the schedules for the Alum Rock to Santa Teresa, and the Mountain View to Winchester, light rail lines will be slightly modified by a few minutes. A detailed explanation of all of the changes is available online and printed in a special July Service Change brochure to be distributed during the last week of June 2009. Maps are included for routes with extensive changes to service hours, frequency and routing. All times listed are approximate. For exact schedule times, click on the related links online or contact VTA Customer Service at (408) 321-2300, TTY at (408) 321-2330, or email to customer.service@vta.org.

Prior to the scheduled service change implementation, VTA held eight community meetings in six cities throughout Santa Clara County to gather public feedback. Input from those meetings, as well as written, phoned or emailed comments were submitted to VTA Customer Service in January and were incorporated into the Annual Transit Service Plan in February. The final draft of the Annual Transit Service Plan was submitted to the VTA Transit Planning and Operations Committee in March. The VTA Board of Directors approved the plan at its April 2, 2009 meeting.
