“Healthier Planet, Healthier You” VTA Mascot Will
Participate at Halftime Show

San Jose, Calif. – Bay Area mascots will make an appearance at the Women’s Professional Soccer game in Santa Clara, Sunday July 19, 2009. The Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will be part of the team spirit; VTA’s own Terry Firma will be among the group displaying some fancy footwork during the special halftime exhibition show at the Football Champion (FC) Gold Pride versus Boston Breakers game at Buck Shaw Stadium, Santa Clara University.
During halftime, VTA’s “Healthier Planet, Healthier You” mascot, Terry Firma, will be doing some fancy footwork and touting the benefits of riding public transit. Terry Firma will highlight new statistics from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) including individuals taking public transit can save $9,137 annually, or an average of $761 a month. The savings are based on the cost of the national averages for parking, car maintenance, and high gas prices.
“Taking VTA bus or light rail is a convenient and affordable way for families to get around,” said VTA General Manager Michael T. Burns. “It’s also one of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint.”
With public transit, a household can reduce carbon emissions by 10 percent when replacing one solo driver. A two-car household can reduce their carbon emissions 30 percent by replacing two cars with public transit. In addition, if the average solo commuter replaced their 20 mile round-trip with transit, it would reduce carbon emissions by 20 pounds per day or 4800 pounds per year. Public transit saves the U.S. more than 11 million gallons of gasoline per day.
