Term New to Dictionaries; Practice Already Popular Here
San Jose, Calif. –While Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary recently announced the term “staycation” would be one of 100 new words added to its next edition, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) wants to note Silicon Valley residents have been using public transportation to enjoy staycations for years.
According to Websters, the term is defined as “as a vacation spent at home or nearby” and first appeared in print in 2005.
“Every summer we see a spike in ridership to popular destinations,” said VTA Chief Operating Officer Dan Smith. “Local libraries, parks, sporting events, free concerts and movies and all the weekend cultural fairs appeal to families looking for fun close to home. VTA buses or light rail get them there quickly and eliminates the need to search out parking at these events.”
Traditionally popular destinations, and the VTA bus or light rail routes that serve them, are listed on VTA’s website, www.vta.org. Parents, teens, or anyone else interested in a staycation can click on the “Popular Destinations” navigation button located on the left side of the main website page and view a long list of interesting local sites served by VTA.
With demand building for even more information on local outings, VTA assisted in a publication put out by two local radio stations, 94.5 K-Bay and Mix 106.5:
Summer Made Simple, The ultimate Day Planner Guide, 2009. It features 28 pages of nearby events and destinations, most of which are accessible by public transportation. Individual listings feature a bus or light rail icon if VTA serves the site. The publication is available at the VTA Downtown Customer Service Center, located at 2 N. First Street in San Jose and in the Building B Lobby at the VTA River Oaks Administrative Offices, located at 3331 N. First Street, also located in
San Jose.
VTA offers trip planning services to interested community members through several different methods; web-based information is available at www.vta.org and VTA’s Customer Service Call Center is staffed from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 7:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and most holidays. It also offers pre-recorded information 24 hours a day. The customer service phone number is (408) 321-2300, with a toll-free line, (800) 894-9908, offered in the 650 area code and South Santa Clara County toll areas. A TTY number, (408) 321-2330 is available for the hearing-impaired.
