New Study Confirms Public Transit’s Role in Reducing Green House Gasses
San Jose, Calif. – New research confirms that coordinating public transit projects such as the BART Silicon Valley Extension with transportation and land use is the most effective way to address the impact of transportation on climate change, and can reduce greenhouse gasses (CHG) by 24%.
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority’s (VTA) BART Silicon Valley Project will influence future land development and mix of housing, office and retail space within a quarter mile radius of the six planned stations. These new densities combined with a future transit system that connects to existing local bus, light rail; and commuter, regional and future High Speed Rail, demonstrates an example of long-term coordinated strategies to reduce emissions due to vehicle travel as identified in the Moving Cooler study conducted by Cambridge Systematics.
VTA is currently holding public meetings to share information about the project’s environmental and quality of life benefits, current and near-term project activities, anticipated schedule, design options, and funding status. Following a brief presentation, meeting attendees can view project displays, meet with VTA and partnering agency staff, and learn about the coordinated efforts underway for planned land use developments. The three remaining public meetings are scheduled as follows:

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Extension Project is an extension of the existing BART system to San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara. This project plans to extend the current BART system 16 miles beginning at the future BART Warm Springs Station in Fremont and proceed on the former Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way through Milpitas to south of Mabury Road in San Jose. The extension would then descend into a 5.1 mile-long subway tunnel, continue through downtown San Jose, and end at grade in Santa Clara near the Caltrain Station. A maintenance and vehicle storage yard would be at the terminus of the project in Santa Clara.
