Public Drives BART Silicon Valley Community Gets Several Opportunities to Steer Project
| Release Number: | nr08-03 |
| Release Date: | Aug 06, 2009 |
San Jose, Calif. – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is offering opportunities for members of the public to participate in key design decisions for BART Silicon Valley, through two interactive public meetings on August 11 and 12, and a web survey at www.vta.org/bart-survey.
The BART Silicon Valley Extension Project is currently in a federal environmental review process to obtain environmental clearance to proceed with final project design and then begin construction. This review requires certain design options and configurations to be determined, and public participation is an important factor in the decision making process.
“The community continues to demonstrate their interest, ownership and support of BART Silicon Valley as demonstrated by the high attendance at past meetings, level of engagement and insightful comments,” states Carolyn Gonot, Chief Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Program Officer.
To date, VTA has held three public meetings and is offering two more to share current and near-term project activities, anticipated schedule, design options, and funding status. Following a brief presentation, meeting attendees can view project displays and meet with VTA and partnering agency staff. The two remaining public meetings are scheduled as follows:
Berryessa
Tuesday, August 11 at 6 p.m.
Berryessa Library, 3355 Noble Ave., San Jose
Downtown San Jose
Wednesday, August 12 at 6 p.m.
Martin Luther King Library, (Rooms 255&257), 150 East San Fernando St., San Jose
VTA is also inviting the public to give input on a name for the BART Silicon Valley Extension Project, to serve as its identity during planning and construction. To participate in the naming of the project visit www.vta.org/bart-survey.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Extension Project is an extension of the existing BART system to San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara. This project plans to extend the current BART system 16 miles beginning at the future BART Warm Springs Station in Fremont and proceed on the former Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way through Milpitas to south of Mabury Road in San Jose. The extension would then descend into a 5.1 mile-long subway tunnel, continue through downtown San Jose, and end at grade in Santa Clara near the Caltrain Station. A maintenance and vehicle storage yard would be at the terminus of the project in Santa Clara.
