WHY: Due to the elimination of the state transit fund and the continuing decline in sales tax revenue, VTA is proposing to reduce bus and light rail services. Despite VTA’s diligent efforts to reduce costs and raise revenues to fill in the budget shortfall, the deficit is larger than projected because of the recession. The proposed changes include an 8 percent cut to bus service and a 6.5 percent reduction in light rail service.
