Transportation Corridor Preparation includes Community Enhancements
Milpitas, Calif. –The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) in partnership with the City of Milpitas and Santa Clara Valley Water District will continue construction through the upcoming weekend of August 15, to widen and straighten a portion of the Berryessa Creek channel to eliminate bottlenecks that have resulted in flooding.
A sharp ‘S’ turn in the creek just south of the Abel Street Bridge will be stretched out and straightened, through transforming the existing creek banks and constructing a new culvert. Work will begin with vibrating sheet piles into place to provide a support structure for the new creek walls. These improvements will upgrade the creek to a 100-year storm standard, minimizing the risk of future flooding to the surrounding neighborhoods. These infrastructure improvements will facilitate the future transit corridor planned for BART Silicon Valley.
Construction activities will occur Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (beginning Sunday, August 16). Weekend work will be conducted to complete construction activities prior to the rainy season. All construction activities are coordinated with local regulatory agencies to protect the creek’s ecosystem and local wildlife.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Extension Project is an extension of the existing BART system to San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara. This project plans to extend the current BART system 16 miles beginning at the future BART Warm Springs Station in Fremont and proceed on the former Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way through Milpitas to south of Mabury Road in San Jose. The extension would then descend into a 5.1 mile-long subway tunnel, continue through downtown San Jose, and end at grade in Santa Clara near the Caltrain Station. A maintenance and vehicle storage yard would be at the terminus of the project in Santa Clara.
