VTA Bus and Light Rail Service for Labor Day Weekend

Release Number:   nr08-14
Release Date:   Aug 28, 2009

Tapestry Arts Festival Patrons Urged to Ride, Rather Than Drive, to Event

San Jose, Calif. –The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) wishes to remind all 250,000 people expected to attend the Tapestry Arts Festival on Labor Day weekend that public transportation offers a hassle-free and inexpensive way to travel to the long-running, downtown San Jose event.

Since finding parking at major cultural events is often time-consuming and stress-inducing, VTA is pointing out to festival goers that it offers over 7,000 spaces of free parking at various bus and light rail facilities located throughout the county.

Perhaps also of interest to Tapestry Arts Festival attendees is VTA’s eight-hour light rail excursion fare, which is priced at just $3.50 and can be purchased from the ticket vending machines at light rail stations.

VTA also wants to make sure all of its riders are aware of the Labor Day holiday weekend service schedule, with buses and light rail running normal weekend schedules on Saturday and Sunday, and with Sunday service levels being provided on Labor Day (Monday, September 7).

Weekend service means VTA’s big three bus routes, Lines 22, 23 and much of Line 25, run every 15 minutes during daytime hours, with light rail running every 15 minutes on the Alum Rock to Santa Teresa line and every 30 minutes on the Mountain View to Winchester Line. Additionally, the popular Express 180, which serves the Fremont BART Station, offers weekend service every 30 minutes.

Information on all VTA light rail and bus service for the holiday weekend can be found at www.vta.org.

Also on the site is an electronic trip planner—provided by Google—that provides travel information. Users can type in their beginning location and destination and the planner will recommend what bus or light rail lines to take and also estimate travel time. Making the process even easier is the fact the planner uses the standard Google Maps format, with which many people are already familiar.

The VTA Customer Service Call Center is another good source of information on VTA’s routes and service. Customer service representatives will be taking calls Labor Day weekend on Saturday and Monday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and prerecorded route information is available 24 hours a day. The Customer Service phone number is (408) 321-2300, TTY only (408) 321-2330. From the 650 area code and South Santa Clara County, call (800) 894-9908.

As for transit services in downtown San Jose during the Tapestry Arts Festival, there will be minor, one-block reroutes of a number of bus lines serving the area. Signs will be in place at the affected stops that direct riders to the nearby temporary stops.
