Mountain View Councilmember John McAlister serves as an alternate member on the VTA Board of Directors representing City Group 2 (the Northwest Cities of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View and Palo Alto), having been appointed in late 2015.
He also serves as an alternate member of the Transit Planning & Operations Committee and represents VTA on the Dumbarton Rail Policy Advisory Board. In addition, he serves on VTA’s Policy Advisory Committee representing Mountain View, having done so since 2013.
Alternate Member McAlister is a member of the Mountain View City Council, having been elected in late 2012. He served as mayor for 2015 and vice mayor for 2014. He serves as Mountain View’s representative on VTA’s State Route 85 Corridor Policy Advisory Board, and is that committee’s vice chairperson for 2016. Other council assignments include the League of California Cities Transportation, Communications and Public Policy Committee, multiple positions on the Cities Association of Santa Clara County, and as an alternate member for the Association of Bay Area Governments General Assembly. Based on Alternate Member McAlister’s recommendation and guidance, in 2015 a group was formed of elected officials from the Northwest Cities and the West Valley Cities to promote communication and consensus-building for a comprehensive study to develop a system-wide plan that integrates future mass transit investment in Santa Clara County.
Civic and community service includes serving for five years on the Mountain View Environmental Planning Commission, including terms as chairperson and vice chairperson. He is active in the YMCA and Rotary, and has been a youth sports coach in Mountain View League for many years, coaching basketball and baseball.
Alternate Member McAlister has lived in Mountain View for over 55 years He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from UC Berkeley and is a Certified Public Accountant. He is a local businessman, owning Baskin Robbins stores in Mountain View and Los Gatos, as well as co-owning a local preschool/daycare. Prior to that, he was a staff accountant at Alexander Grant & Company CPA as well as the Ski Patrol Director at Heavenly Mountain Resort.
