Overview

The project made improvements to Interchange at Capitol Expressway and ramp modifications at Yerba Buena Road. View a map of the project location.

Objective

The purpose of this project was to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety along the U.S. 101 corridor in east San Jose by eliminating mainline traffic bottlenecks and removing merging and weaving conflicts.

Project Features

The proposed improvements:
  • Constructed a separate Yerba Buena Road off-ramp from southbound U.S. 101
  • Constructed a southbound U.S. 101 auxiliary lane between the Capitol Expressway and Yerba Buena Road.
  • Modified Capitol Expressway Interchange from full cloverleaf to partial cloverleaf.
  • Extended the fifth southbound lane from north of Capitol Expressway to south of Yerba Buena Road.
  • Constructed northbound slip on-ramp from northbound collector - distributor road.

Operations

Caltrans operates and maintains the highway improvements.

$22.4 million in Corridor Mobility Improvement Account (CMIA)
$1.1 million in Regional Surface Transportation Program (RSTP)
$7.1 million in Local Funds
$30.6 million Total Funding
