U.S. 101/Bailey Avenue Interchange Project

Overview
This project will construct a new full interchange on U.S. 101 in South San Jose, extending Bailey Avenue east of Monterey Road and across Coyote Creek, connecting to Malech Road. The City of San Jose is the project sponsor.
Objective
To provide freeway access as well as improve traffic flow and local street connections.
Project Features
The project will include the following:
- Overcrossing at U.S. 101 including four lanes and a median shoulder
- New bridge over Coyote Creek including six lanes and a median shoulder
- At grade intersection at Monterey Road
- Off-ramps from northbound and southbound U.S. 101 to Bailey Avenue and Malech Road
- Loop on-ramp to northbound U.S. 101 from Bailey Avenue and Malech Road
- On-ramp to southbound U.S. 101. from Bailey Avenue and Malech Road.
Maintenance of Traffic Flow
For the safety of the public and construction workers, traffic control measures (such as temporary lane closures and detours) will be used when needed. Contractors will make every effort to maintain access and minimize disruptions.
Operations
Upon completion, Caltrans will operate and maintain the new highway interchange. The City of San Jose will operate and maintain the local streets and bridge over Coyote Creek.
Capitol Cost/Project Funding
$23.6 million: $19.3 million from the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), which includes $14.8 million from Caltrans and $4.5 million in local STIP through VTA, and $4.3 million from the City of San Jose.
