U.S. 101 Improvement Project (I-280 to Yerba Buena Road)

Overview
This project will construct various mainline and ramp improvements along U.S. 101 between the I-280/I 680 interchange and Yerba Buena Road in San Jose.
Objective
The purpose of this project is to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety along the U.S. 101 corridor in east San Jose by eliminating mainline traffic bottlenecks and removing merging and weaving conflicts.
Project Features
The proposed improvements would:
- Construct an additional lane on southbound U.S. 101 from south of Story Road to Yerba Buena Road.
- Replace the Tully Road over-crossing over U.S. 101.
- Reconfigure the U.S. 101/Tully Road interchange.
Maintenance of Traffic Flow
For the safety of the public and construction workers, traffic control measures (such as temporary lane closures and detours) will be used as needed. Contractors will be required to make every effort to maintain access and minimize disruptions. The public will be notified before traffic control measures are implemented.
Operations
Upon completion, Caltrans will operate and maintain the highway improvements.
$63 million: $30 million from the Corridor Mobility Improvement Account (CMIA) and $33 million from the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), Federal and State Highway Funds and other local sources.
Project Schedule
Construction begins Spring 2010
Construction complete Winter 2012
