U.S. 101 Improvement Project (Tully Road Interchange)

Printable Fact Sheet
Caltrans web page including traffic impact updates

Project Overview

This project will construct various mainline and ramp improvements along U.S. 101 at Tully Road in San Jose.

Objective

The purpose of this project is to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety along the U.S. 101 corridor in east San Jose by eliminating mainline traffic bottlenecks and removing merging and weaving conflicts.

Features

The proposed improvements would:

  • Construct an additional lane on southbound U.S. 101 from south of Story Road to north of Capitol Expressway
  • Replace the Tully Road over-crossing over U.S. 101
  • Reconfigure the U.S. 101/Tully Road interchange

Maintenance of Traffic Flow

For the safety of the public and construction workers, traffic control measures (such as temporary lane closures and detours) will be used as needed. Contractors will be required to make every effort to maintain access and minimize disruptions. The public will be notified before traffic control measures are implemented.

Operations

Construction will be managed by Caltrans. Upon completion, Caltrans will operate and maintain the highway improvements.

Project Schedule

Construction begins: Fall 2010/Winter 2011 - Contingent on the passage of the State budget
Construction complete: Fall 2012

Project Funding

$63 million: $30 million from the Corridor Mobility Improvement Account (CMIA) and $33 million from the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), Federal and State Highway Funds and other local sources.
