U.S. 101 Improvement Project (Monterey Road to SR 129)

Overview

This project will construct various mainline and ramp improvements along U.S. 101 between the Monterey Road and State Route (SR) 129 interchanges in south Santa Clara /north San Benito counties. In addition, construction of a new interchange at the U.S. 101 and SR 25 intersection and the extension of Santa Teresa Boulevard will accommodate future traffic demands.

Objective

The purpose of this project is to relieve existing and future traffic congestion along U.S. 101 from Monterey Road to SR 129 (including the U.S. 101/SR 25 intersection) and improve safety along the U.S. 101 corridor in south Santa Clara /north San Benito counties by eliminating mainline traffic bottlenecks and removing merging and weaving conflicts.

Project Features

The proposed improvements would:

  • Widen U.S. 101 to a 6-lane freeway from the Monterey Road Interchange in Gilroy to the State Route (SR) 129 Interchange
  • Reconstruct the existing U.S. 101/SR25 Interchange
  • Widen the southbound off-ramp at the U.S. 101/SR129 Interchange
  • Add an auxiliary lane in each direction on U.S. 101 between the Monterey Road Interchange and the U.S. 101/SR 25 Interchange
  • Extend Santa Teresa Boulevard from Castro Valley Boulevard to the new U.S. 101/SR 25 Interchange
  • Construct a grade separation at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing on SR 25
  • Reconstruct SR 25 from U.S.101 to Bloomfield Rd
  • Construct bike and pedestrian paths in the corridor from Betabel Road to SR 129.

Maintenance of Traffic Flow

For the safety of the public and construction workers, traffic control measures (such as temporary lane closures and detours) will be used as needed. Contractors will be required to make every effort to maintain access and minimize disruptions. The public will be notified before traffic control measures are implemented.

Operations

Upon completion, Caltrans will operate and maintain the highway improvements.

Capital Cost

$370 million

Project Schedule

Construction deferred until funding is available.
