U.S. 101 Operational Improvements Project

Overview
This project will construct various mainline and ramp improvements along U.S. 101 between I-280/I-680 and Yerba Buena Road in San Jose.
Objective
The purpose of this proposed project is to reduce traffic congestion resulting from merging and weaving conflicts and to improve the overall U.S. 101 freeway system performance. This includes eliminating mainline traffic bottlenecks and improving safety.
Project Features
The proposed improvements would:
• Construct an additional lane on southbound U.S. 101 from south of Story Road to Yerba Buena Road
• Reconfigure the U.S. 101/Tully Road interchange • Reconfigure the U.S. 101/Capitol Expressway interchange
• Construct an auxiliary lane on southbound U.S. 101 between the Tully Road and Capitol Expressway interchanges
• Modify the Yerba Buena Road on-ramp to northbound U.S. 101
• Modify the southbound U.S. 101 off-ramp to Yerba Buena Road
• Replace the Tully Road over-crossing over U.S. 101 Replace existing sound walls, if required, along U.S. 101.
Maintenance of Traffic Flow
For the safety of the public and construction workers, traffic control measures (such as temporary lane closures and detours) will be used when needed. Contractors will make every effort to maintain access and minimize disruptions.
Operations
Upon completion, Caltrans will operate and maintain the improved highway interchange. The City of San Jose will operate and maintain the local street.
