Charcot Avenue Extension Project

Project Overview
This project in San Jose, California proposes to extend Charcot Avenue to Old Oakland Road by constructing new roadway and a grade-separated structure over Interstate 880.
Project Objective
The primary goal for the project is to provide east-west connectivity over I-880 and relieve congestion on the existing east-west corridors in the immediate vicinity, including Brokaw Road and Montague Expressway.
Project Features
The proposed improvements would provide:
- A grade separated bridge structure across I-880 that will accommodate the future widening of that freeway (one additional High Occupancy Vehicle lane in each direction).
- A new road to extend and connect Charcot Avenue to Old Oakland Road via the existing Silkwood Lane
- Retaining walls and widening of Silkwood Lane to conform to the new overcrossing and roadway
- Modifications to the existing Charcot Avenue and O’Toole Avenue intersection
- Pedestrian and bicyclist access through the corridor
Capital Cost/Project Funding
The total capital cost to complete the project will be determined once the Preliminary Approval and Environmental Document (PA&ED) phase is completed. The City of San Jose has funded $800,000 for the PA&ED phase of the project. Upon construction completion, City of San Jose will operate and maintain the improvements.
Project Schedule
PA&ED begins: Fall 2008
PA&ED complete: Late 2009
