RIVER OAKS BICYCLE/PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PROJECT

Project Overview:
This project proposes to construct a bicycle/pedestrian bridge over the Guadalupe River to connect neighborhoods in the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara near Montague Expressway and First Street in North San Jose. This project will facilitate bicycle and pedestrian access between the two sides of the river and will provide convenient access to the River Oaks light rail station in San Jose.
Project Objective:
The purpose of this project is to meet the demand for safe and efficient pedestrian and bicycle pathways in the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara for both recreational and commuting use.
Project Features:
This project will provide a bicycle/pedestrian connection between the neighborhoods in the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara through the construction of the following project features:
First Phase
- A prefabricated steel bridge across the Guadalupe River at the end of the River Oaks cul-de-sac
- A ramp that complies with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements and stairs to allow users to access the trail at the River Oaks section of the project
- Rest areas to allow the trail users to rest and observe the natural environment in the Guadalupe River
- A 12-foot wide paved levee path on the Santa Clara side of the bridge.

Second Phase (unfunded)
- Bicycle and pedestrian path along River Oaks Parkway
- An entry plaza at the southwest corner of the River Oaks Parkway and North First Street Intersection.
City of Santa Clara Elements
- Bicycle and pedestrian path connecting Lick Mill Boulevard
- A ramp that complies with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements to allow users to access the trail at the Lick Mill section of the project.
Capital Cost/Project Funding:
$3 million is available for construction from the City of San Jose, City of Santa Clara, 1996 Measure B Bicycle Program, Transportation Funds for Clean Air, and Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
Project Schedule:
First Phase construction begins: Early 2005
First Phase complete: Early 2006
